On a serious note, while re-adventuring my blog post under the starry night, I uttered a silent prayers to the two young monks of Kirti Monastery in Northeastern Tibet, who in a bid to sacrifice their precious life for the cause of Tibet, demonstrated and burned themselves early yesterday, against the repressive Chinese policies in Tibet. May their martyrdom remain immortal and glorious in the hearts of all Tsampa Eaters, and let it be an inspiration to all the young Tibetans (both in and outside Tibet) to live and die for Tibet.
Early yesterday, while preparing a weekly prayers for my departed pala at home, I missed a message from my activist friend on my mobile phone, which confirms two Tibetan monks attempted self immolation in Ngaba. I responded in asking WHEN? as I did not realize that the incident happened just in the morning. It was such a shocking news that I moaned with a deep thought of an utter loss of young Tibetans. Yet, I eulogize them for their selfless sacrifices for Tibet. This current incident put me in a serious mood of recapitulating the current situation inside Tibet and its esoteric future of witnessing more of such sacrifices. So, here are some of the questions, which needs to dwell into its causes. why are we witnessing more suicidal attempts among Tibetans in protest against the current policy of China?; Are these self immolation bids going to make differences in China's control over Tibet? What are our belief on suicidal and are these acts considered violent or nonviolent?
>Current Situation in Tibet: height of oppression
In March 2008, Tibetans in Tibet (three traditional provinces) rouse unitedly to challenge the autocratic rules of China, who had significantly traumatized and subdued the Tibetans for decades. The demonstrations, so spontaneous became a burning topic for discussions in all over the world, with China standing so close to launch their first mega million International sporting events, Olympics. China, considering that moment, had a tough time to abate the crisis and had channelized their means in both hard and soft approaches, which somehow succeeded in giving a roaring impressions of New China to the outside world. The emerging China stepped forward and pushed themselves next to the United States of America. But, the reality of New China is much different from the way they projected and propagated to the outside world. The unilateral style of Mao's oppression and tyranny inside China (including Tibet) are hence treated like an old wine in a new bottle.
Aftermath March 2008 uprising in Tibet, a Chinese investigative research team visited Tibet and publicized their report by accusing the Chinese Government for their ill-will policies inside Tibet in terms of socio economic affairs. However, they have delicately untouched the root causes of Tibet, with the fear of Chinese government's manhandling them as such cases happened many times in China. Discussion of political issues inside Tibet is treated as taboo and the expression of such rights resulted in prosecution in the name of 'State Security'. The security vigilance since then were tightened up with strict code of conducts for the internet users, blocking sensitive Tibet issues in the nets, and any other communicational avenues. The telephones were regularly tapped, the emigre Tibetan radio services were jammed and bandwidth were frequently disrupted with their loud Chinese Propagandas. Furthermore, the Chinese government are using the Developmental excuses to forcibly resettle the traditional Tibetan nomads into a concrete blocks, under the vigilance of Chinese Security Personals.
China over the years had planned to make Tibet a living museum to make profits. Even before the capitalist roaders took charge of China, Potala Palace remained the backdrop of Tibet in the eyes of China. Despite the fact that Mao's China accused feudalism to the core and accused His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the main culprit, but his palace still remains the symbol of Tibet, not only for the Tibetans but also for the Chinese Government. Despite the fact that Mao's China hated religion so much that Mao labelled it as poison, but yet, the Potala Palace, the abode of His Holiness the Dalai Lama still holds a significant commercial value for China to promote tourism within domestic and worldwide. So, what is socialism really means to China? Is China trustworthy or playing foul games to meet their selfish ends? and , do China really considers Religion as poison and Feudalism as an outdated system? If then, Why China gives their heart and mind in manipulating and intruding in Tibetan Buddhism, even to the extend of claiming their illegitimate right of choosing the next Dalai Lama. Why then Potala Palace the remnant of so called 'Feudalism' is still used extensively by the Chinese.
Tibet: A baggage of problems
The crux of the problem lies in a political nature of the Tibetan crisis as China brutally occupied Tibet. In order to enforce their illegitimate control over Tibet, China experimented harsh political subjugation with an accelerating developmental policies by injecting massive population transfer from mainland China. This led to the near complete annihilation of Tibetan identity, thus neglecting the religious and socio economic rights of the indigenous Tibetans.
Moving back to the history, when China occupied Tibet, whole of Tibet fought the China's intrusion to protect their sovereignty and dharma (Religion) of Tibet. Thousands died sacrificing their life and Tibet ultimately became a pool of bloodshed under the Chinese mercenaries. Yet, Tibet survived the horrific and devastating catastrophes by living with the hope of a renewed spirit yearning to attain their wishful goal. Such are the undying spirit of Tibetans inside Tibet that keeps Tibet moving forward. This reminds me of a conversation with one of my foreign friends few years back, who told me that Tibetans should be proud of being Tibetans as the Tibetans are the descendants of Great warriors. Great warriors won't yield even though the bones were rusted. True as it is, even after more than 50 years of Chinese occupation, we are witnessing many brave martyrs, young ones who were born under captivation and have not seen independent Tibet. And marches with the dream of free Tibet.
China may feels nonsense to deal with the suicidal attempts by our young blooded Tibetans who only harms one selves by immolating themselves in protest against the China's hardline policy inside Tibet. With dharma in mind, Tibetans are not attempting violent means to harm and kill others but are taking a heroic steps of killing one selves, by knowing that fact that killing oneself means is a sinful deed. Suicidal is an untraditional practice inside Tibet but such suicidal for the cause of Tibet are considered martyrs and will always be.
Since more and more are opting to die in protest against China's rule in the recent times, the Chinese government should not delay in reevaluating their policies inside Tibet. The time has come for the China to act upon positively by shunning their old and savage attitude towards Tibet. If China fails to take actions, Tibet will burn with more bloods and sacrifices, which will make it difficult to curb the problems. In 2008 and early this year, when the Tibetan monks attempted self immolation, China failed to gauge into the problem. Instead, China detained and accused other monks for encouraging them to take such actions. It is understandable that if China introduced more rigid and hardcore policies inside Tibet, Tibetans will rise beyond China's control in the near future.
China is well aware that the young Tibetans both inside and outside Tibet are charged with high spirits of regaining freedom of Tibet. Even though, many in exile were born in foreign land, their hearts long for Tibet. Likewise, many in Tibet have not seen His Holiness the Dalai Lama, but their faith and loyalty remains at peak. Such are the combination of these two emotions that connect the youths of Tibet. And these emotions shall not be dampened and neither shall take away from the youths of Tibet. So, till the Tibet issues resolve, more martyrs will join for the cause and shall be remembered for their heroic sacrifices.
Beware China, this time and in the near future, the martyrs will sacrifice themselves by not harming others, due to the strict command of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, our spiritual leader in adopting non violent approach. But, make no mistakes in considering it our weakness, as it is our strength. If the Tibetan issues did not move an inch, then our patience will melt down and then our sacrifice could have much more appalling results at China's end. So, for the sake of Tibet and China's future, it is important for the current Chinese leaders to assert on finding a peaceful resolution on Tibet by negotiating with the Envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, when His Holiness is alive. As all know, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the key for resolving the Sino-Tibet issue and China must prevail this opportunity.
